What do you think of the Pentagon and CIA officially considering climate change a threat to national security?

Dana, keep in mind that they are using the false findings provided by the CRU as well as the Hansen, et al -doctored surface station data.

They are victims as are a lot of other well-meaning institutions and individuals.

P.S. give the 10 points to someone else….. I really don’t need them.

I think it highlights the dangers of over blowing a "problem" in an effort to achieve other goals. It creates other problems through the "Law of Unintended Consequences".

If your goal is to reduce fossil fuel use for reasons other than climate change or if you want to reduce western consumption or slow perceived out of control economic growth, then creating policies to achieve this based on affecting climate will have many negative side effects.

If you have an ingrown toenail and a rash on your ankle, amputating your leg might be an effective, easy solution and even an obvious solution, but it is not the best solution.

About as much as their file of 1974 on the threat of global cooling (link to upload below).

From the summary of that report:

"The western world’s leadlng climatologists have confirmed reports of a detrimental global climatic change. The stability of most nations is based upon a dependable source of food, but this stability will not be possible under the new cllmatic era. A forecast by the University of Wisconsin projects that the Earth’s climate is returning to that of the neo·boreal era (1600-1850) – an era of drought, famine, and political unrest in the western world." "

The CIA like pretty much every organisation are anxious to ensure that their budget is not seen as expendable compared to other departments and institutions.

IMHO, it says more about power politics in America then it does about the AGW debate.

Well in a few years when the worlds climate reaches Dalton minimum conditions it could be a serious problem keeping our troops warm in the field. You must seriously consider that most of the problems English forces faced in the US during the war of 1812 were because of the extreme cold at that time made it necessary for them to use German troops who were able to more easily handle the weather conditions than British troops were. But even then the foreign troops were unable to fight properly in a strange land during such exceeding cold conditions while worrying how their families at home were dealing with the cold. We will most likely see conditions close to those in as little as 8 more years if the world continues to cool off as fast as it currently is.

    G. Climate Change and NaturalDisastersThe impact of global warming and its potentialto cause natural disasters and other harmful phenomenasuch as rising sea levels has become a prominent—and controversial—national and international concern. Some argue that there will be more and greater storms andnatural disasters, others that there will be fewer In many respects, scientific conclusions about the causes and potential effects of global warming are contradictory.

Your to young to remember past events, but everything is related to national security. As for whoopee factor it rates a 3. There was a point in NA history(more than one) where being from a ethnic background raised issues. Do I want a government logo imprinted on my toilet paper? Only if it has a the iconic representation of Big Al, Mann, or Princess Phillip. I would sponsor that type of green product. As for mass migrations he’s about 50 years to late.

It seems the course of prudence. If 1/2 of Manhatten island is flooded, that could easily trigger challenges to the national security. New Orleans is another obvious case as is Central Florida.

Hurricanes could become unmanageable by the National Guard, and require deployment of regular Army and Marines to maintain civil order. It’s a function of water temperatures in the Atlantic and in the Gulf.

Alliances of effected foreign nations could crop up in unexpected ways giving rise to outlandish votes and resolutions in the UN, or decisions by the World Court, or even military or terrorist action aimed at the USA and others.

Anything that creates mass movements of peoples, or large numbers of homeless and displaced persons can be a national security threat. If there are wildfires on the West coast, for example, or if the Great Lakes were to overflow (or dry up).

Freshwater shortages could cause massive civil unrest.

The thin blue line is astonishingly thin. Add up all the cops plus the national guard, and the bottom line is that USA’s good conduct is on the "Honor System", which barely works in our Service Academies and Ivy League Colleges, much less in the big tough cities.

I’ve seen the Army get called out. I’ve seen quad 50’s set up on the steps of the U.S. Capitol (that’s four 50 mm machine guns linked in tandem to a single trigger). I’ve seen tanks rolling down Pennsylvania Avenue. If you live long enough, you see a LOT of things. So, some older people have more imagination than kids do about what CAN happen — kids that have seen everything in the past 20 years — don’t really know that much.

So, my hat’s off to DOD and CIA if they say "Let’s not be caught asleep at the switch this time, lilke we usually are." It’s lawful for government bureaucrats to earn their pay. Doesn’t happen much, but when it does, we should give applause, not brikbats.

We saw what a natural disaster can do on a small scale during the aftermath of hurricane Katrina. We still have not recovered from that disaster.

Increase incidents of natural disasters is predicted. This will surely stretch thin our government resources. Civil unrest. Surrounding cities will suffer the burden of caring for displaced victims. The cost of rebuilding disaster areas will cripple us financially. Rampant disease. And so on.

A government crippled by the turmoil and tremendous expense of repeated natural disasters will surely leave itself open for revolution or, worse, invasion. Yes. It is about time our federal government sees climate change for what it is.

I think like every other department in the federal government, the DOD has to fight for it’s share of the money. Obama supports a draw down of military technology following large ammounts of funding from Bush and others.

"Plan for the worst" means – we need *a lot* more money than you’ve been giving us.
