Well, we need more info on what the paper is about but here’s the general steps.
1) define the goals of the 20 page paper. Separate it into sections that are topics of discussion.
2) Figure out which sections need to be completed first prior to latter sections being completed. Create a Gantt chart indicating that.
3) From the Gantt chart derive a schedule
4) Assign people to each task.
5) Monitor each step of the way to ensure it’s completed as expected.

I have a project with some activities and i want to make S – curve for it
can you please guide me through the proper steps using MS Project or Excel?

The S-curve method is actually not only one curve but three, known as Earned Value Analysis (EVA):
PV=Planned Value
EV=Earned Value
AC=Actual Cost
PV represents your project cost schedule, i.e. the work that should have been done, to date.
EV shows the accomplished work in terms of its $-value, i.e. the work that has been done, to date.
AC shows the accumulated cost spent on your project, to date.
On http://www.project-management-knowhow.com/earned_value_project_management.html, you find a good explanation, and on
http://www.project-management-knowhow.com/free_project_management_tools.html, there is an EVA template (Excel) you can download and use for free.

Rather than giving general instructions on smaller tasks and then devoting his time to supervising larger concerns, the micromanager monitors and assesses every step of a business process and avoids delegation of decisions.[6] Micromanagers are usually irritated when a subordinate makes decisions without consulting them, even if the decisions are totally within the subordinate’s level of authority.

Micromanagement also frequently involves requests for unnecessary and overly detailed reports ("reportomania"). A micromanager tends to require constant and detailed performance feedback and tends to be excessively focused on procedural trivia (often in detail greater than he can actually process) rather than on overall performance, quality and results. This focus on "low-level" trivia often delays decisions, clouds overall goals and objectives, restricts the flow of information between employees, and guides the various aspects of a project in different and often opposed directions. Many micromanagers accept such inefficiencies because those micromanagers consider the outcome of a project less important than their retention of control or of the appearance of control.

The most extreme cases of micromanagement constitute a management pathology closely related to, e.g., workplace bullying and narcissistic behavior. Micromanagement resembles addiction in that although most micromanagers are behaviorally dependent on control over others, both as a lifestyle and as a means of maintaining that lifestyle, many of them fail to recognize and acknowledge their dependence even when everyone around them observes it.[1] Some severe cases of micromanagement arise from other underlying mental-health conditions such as obsessivecompulsive personality disorder, although not all allegations of such conditions by subordinates and other "armchair psychologists" are accurate.

Narcissists love to delegate work, and then interfere by micromanaging it. If it goes well they take the credit (plagiarism); if it goes badly, they blame the person they delegated it to.[7]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Micromanagement

Fits Obama perfectly, takes credit from others accomplishments and blames someone else for his dismal failures

He is not a real leader… Micromanaging is what people do when out of their depths. Since they have a hard time understanding what is happening, they grab hold of things that can understand.

I am currently about to pursue the journey of becoming a PM ( in the business field)
I am trying to make sure that I am taking the right steps. I have a Masters in Business Management, and am currently searching for Project Coordinator positions in Chicago, and planning to become a PM and them PMP. I have researched multiple sites, and I know I cannot take the PMP test until I have fulfilled the 4,500 hours of experience. But I am trying to decide if it is wise to begin the process fulfill the 35 contact hours of formal education as specified on the PMI site through a school, R.E.P., etc. while working as a project coordinator, or should I wait until I am a PM and then begin taking the classes? I also have a few courses that were based on project management from my graduate studies and I was wondering if those courses could be applied towards the 35 hour requirement as long as it is from an accredited university? Also if I start working on those courses now, should I get the CAPM certification first then once I have the 3 years of PM experience take the PMP certification test? I appreciate any light that anyone can shed on this for me.
Thank you

I know project managers that have don their PMP and worked in order to gain the qualification quicker.
Im not sure how it works with using existing project management training against the hrs required. I would do it as soon as possible

I am doing a project management class and I need to know how about how much days these individual step take approximately….

Site clearing -
Removal of trees-
General excavation-
Grading general area-
Foundation construction-
Excavation for utility trenches-
Placing formwork and reinforcement for concrete-
Installing sewer lines-
Installing other utilities-
Pouring concrete-
Excavate trench-
Place formwork-
Place reinforcing-

Ok, First of all, some of the tasks are categories and some are sub categories…

1) Site Clearing includes tree removal, general excavation (and fill if necessary), trenching, and general Grading, possibly basic excavation for utilities. Count on at least 4 days in summer and good weather… Allow two days for rain… Most of these tasks will run concurrently, not consecutively…

2) Foundation construction will include the rest of the list… Depending on the size of the structure, count on 3 days for a typical house and pour concrete on the fourth day…
Again most of the tasks will run concurrently…

This comes from my experience with several Cement finishers… A good team will be cleaning up the area on the fourth evening… They will usually return about a week later to break out the forms…

Final utility installation will be last… That is installing a service pole and turning on the elec for the framing crews… Water/sewer will be at the very end of the job… usually just before landscaping…

 But for the sake of each individual task here is what I would estimate;
Site clearing – 2 days with heavy equipment
Removal of trees- dependent on how many and size of the trees 2 days
General excavation- 2 days
Grading general area- 1 day
Foundation construction- 4 days
Excavation for utility trenches- 1 day
Placing formwork and reinforcement for concrete- 2 days
Installing sewer lines- 1 day
Installing other utilities- 1 day
Pouring concrete- Must be done in start to finish in one day, because once pouring starts it can’t be stopped and restarted
Excavate trench- 1 day
Place formwork- 2 days
Place reinforcing- 1 day (usually a good team of rod busters will have the reinforcement complete by just after lunch… on the 3rd day… They may have the Rebar and mesh ready before the forms are completed, if so then they will want to start placing them as soon as the formsetters are out of the way…

This applies to a typical house foundation, and you should allow a little more time for a larger structure… But typically a larger building project would just have more workers…

 Hope this helps

Professional ways to say "Other activities"?
I am workin gon the development of a project management program at work and am struggling with a way to define the final heading.
This heading will house the "miscelaneous" type tasks that require only one or two steps.

So far we have a list (at the bottom of this message) but none of these seem to hit the nail on the head. They’re good but not great… any suggestions??

- Miscellaneous tasks
- Other Work
- Assorted Activities
- Mini projects
- Les autres
-Everything else that’s not nailed down
- Sundry
Miscellaneous

I like ‘Other Activities’ the best. I think it’s fine. You don’t need to be too clever with this sort of thing — everyone knows what you mean. I don’t know what the activities are of course, but it seems broad enough to describe anything. ‘Remaining Activities’ is another possibility. But I like ‘Other’.

‘Miscellaneous’ second. Or there’s always ‘Miscellany’ which is a bit nicer. ‘Other Work’ third.

‘Assorted Activities’, ‘Mini Projects’ and ‘Sundry’ I would vote against.

‘Les Autres’, ‘Sundry’ and ‘Everything Else That’s not Nailed Down’ I would suggest are out of the question.
