Are project management courses just a load of fluff?

Some people (notably with PMP certification) encourage me to take project management courses, as it helped their work and their career. I flipped through some project management books and it seems to me that the whole subject is about nothing – just giving fancier names and classification to common sense and organizational activities.
Is there really something in project management theory that is worth studying? I mean, anything that a regular person would not know or easily figure out? You know what I mean?

Project Management PMP certification would help you move up the career ladder, if you have good years of experience, certification will act as a booster. Experience is must, project management theory deals with best practices, latest tools that would lead to project success, allocating, manipulating and optimizing scope, time, budget.

PMP certification is all about how a PM would engineer projects, business operations in an interdependent environment, using distinct technical skills, communication skills. You learn the best practices to reach goals in am ambitious situation; latest tools, software, methodologies integration knowledge can be easily inculcated.

I’m aware of Fred Brooks’ "The Mythical Man Month" but are there any other

Hi there,
I am new in the project management field (recently got graduated last year) and been working in one of the largest IT companies in KSA as a project coordinator, i’ve already take the PMP course but sadly i cant apply to it unless i have 3500+ hours of experience in PM field, so what i am asking is a project management plan, i am currently studying the PMBOK V4 but that doesnt let me do anything other then knowledge.

If anyone could provide me with a one year plan of achievements i could work on like lets say :
- i need to improve myself in one year periode, what trainings shall i get, certifications, books, experience and so on.
-I need to follow a plan that could strengthen my PM skills and increase my skills.

Have patience, as you are already working with IT brand name as project coordinator, also taken PMP course, also you are studying PMBOK V4 so it is really very good and beneficial and in long run you can become project director, there are also courses like PM@Siemens.

In meantime you should concentrate on other activities and learn about procurement techniques used to determine projects’ success and failure in an organization. Know more about key project constraints that include resources, risk, cost, scope, schedule, quality; impacts of constraints; learn to manage interdependent projects in order to align organization’s objectives. Get through with the PMBOK all the 42 processes and project management metrics, project execution management, process management, product portfolio management.

Try to gain knowledge about Monte Carlo Simulation process used to calculate output (total cost or completion dates) probability based on input. Cover topics like quality theories and attribute sampling and variable sampling.

I’m going to take project management Professional certification exam. I’m looking for some good study books. Any suggestions? How long should I study at least for this exam? Any other suggestions are welcome! Thanks!

The book that helped me for my preparation of the PMP exam was
Rita Mulcahy: PMP Exam Prep – A Course in a Book.
Since then they changed the profile of the exam. So, please look for the newest edition of that book.
Maybe, you want to try it in a library first to find out if it matches your style.
I worked with this book for 4 weeks, approx. 1 to 2 hours a day, and I passed the exam.
