Hi, Does Project Management have scope in US and UK and which are the important certifications required?
Thanks in advance.

In UK, project management practitioners must obtain the PRINCE2 qualification if they are to be employed in government contract work or in a major public company.

PRojects IN Controlled Environments (PRINCE) is a project management method. It covers the management, control and organisation of a project. "PRINCE2" refers to the second major version of this method and is a registered trademark of the Office of Government Commerce (OGC), an independent office of HM Treasury of the United Kingdom.

Accreditation is governed by the passing of two exams the Foundation and the Practitioner. The Foundation exam is a one-hour, multiple choice exam. The Practitioner exam lasts for 2.5 hours, and is an objective-testing multiple-choice exam. Around the world, exams are administered by APMG-International.

PRINCE2 Practitioners must retake the Practitioner exam every 5 years to remain accredited. This re-registration comprises a 1-hour examination set at the same standard as the Practitioner examination.

While surfing for project management resources, I came across queries about construction project management. I’d like to know if any particular software is used for managing projects in construction industry ?

There are many project management softwares available. I don’t know if there’s any particular software dedicated only for the construction projects. Advanced project management solutions like Microsoft project 2010 can be used for different industries like construction, education, life sciences, manufacturing, retail etc.

Evergreen College had helped us achieve this goal. With the great help & support from our teachers and administration, our school did not end when the class did. It continues even today, for they had given us the skills and knowledge to succeed in the professional field we had chosen. We are very grateful for the support and assistance we received, as well as the opportunity to meet potential employers, industry representatives and colleagues

I am curious because I have a master in engineering management, but I as an entry level, I can’t find a job which fits me other than an entry level in my field (electrical engineer), and project management

P.S: obviously, I don’t have enough experience :)

Difficult to answer, because "Management" is not a clearly defined function in practice.

Take "Project Management." First, there has to be a Project. That generally involves all of the disciplines that will be necessary to do market wants and needs and competition assessment, available plant/organizational resources, available facilities (space, power, laboratory, computer, etc), available manpower in the various disciplines that will be needed to implement any Project concept, and so on. Typically, no "Project Management" people will be involved in the decision to commit to a Project, and the definition of its specifications, time, manpower, available resources and funding. Typically in making these decisions and allocations, one or more key engineers and other disciplines who will be involved in the physical implementation of the process will have been involved in the decision process. At some point, not point exactly but rather time frame, key leaders will be assigned for the technical and implementation areas, and a Project Manager will be specified to essentially coordinate the way in which these groups communicate and are given and use resources. Any actual time and results schedules and/or benchmarks are normally formed by the PM after coercing the elements that form an overall schedule from the individual discipline leaders. This involves a great deal of communication skill and organizational understanding and correlation. The PM doesn’t have much actual power, that resides in the person or persons who made the final decision to do the project and the PM can only exercise influence on them. This again involves considerable communication and presentation skill, and psychology, but not actual power. Not a lot of actual engineering or technical skill is required by the PM, but it essential he understand the overall objectives and resources, and can understand the significance of the team making or not making the various benchmarks.

Now take Engineering Management. In many ways, each of the technical discipline Managers function much like the PM, only in their specific disciplines. That is, they pick their staff from those top management makes available, assign the key staff responsibilities for key results necessary to accomplish their part of the team effort, allocate their resources according their best judgment, and work out time schedules with benchmarks that will result in their overall part of the project being accomplished. After that, they really leave their engineers and technical people alone to do their job, subject to meeting benchmarks. EMs do have real power, they can remove or advance their key people. But, they rarely do real engineering in the sense of doing the math/physics/programming/research/experiments etc themselves. Even more rarely do they have the skill to do so very well.

I don’t know what they taught you about engineering management in your Master’s program, but the above is the way I have found things got done in my own career. I imagine much of what I have said resonates with you, and that is good. You have a great start in knowing how to be a good engineering boss, once you become a good engineer. Many good engineers make horrible bosses, because they never understood the difference in skill sets required.

If you get an entry level job in EE, that will be absolutely great for you. Keep everything you’ve learned about management in mind, observe closely how well or how poorly those with management responsibility do their jobs … and learn what a real engineer actually does. It will be great fun. I’d like to see how well you’ve done, and what you are doing, in ten years or so. Good Luck :)

what is the role of PMI certification(project management institute)
in todays competetive world?

PMI is based in the US and has a stronger "base" in the US than anywhere else. However, it is growing fast in other parts of the world – in particular India and China.

There are now several PMI certifications. The one that has been available the longest, and is most recognized, is the PMP certification. The others are newer and less well known.

The PMP certification is more-or-less a prerequisite these days for a serious project manager. It doesn’t mean you’re any good as a PM, but it does demonstrate that you know what you should be doing, and that you understand the vocabulary. If you’re competing against other certified project managers, you’ll have to explain why you aren’t certified yourself.

According to PMI, these are the reasons why organizations should support PMP certification:

1. Your workforce will understand processes and terminology. To obtain a credential, individuals must pass a multiple-choice exam and other evaluations based on the current body of knowledge and tasks related to the job role.

2. Your workforce will be more disciplined. Credential holders are not only tested on their knowledge of project management terminology and processes, but also on their competence to perform in their role.

3. Your workforce will know what to look for before they start a project. By understanding the common processes and terminology, your project team knows the steps to initiating, executing and closing a project thereby making success more likely.

4. Your workforce will value team work. Certified project management practitioners tend to have good communication skills, human resource management and to take advantage of diverse expertise through collaborative efforts.

5. Your clients will have increased confidence because your project team uses baseline of terminology and practices. This shows that your project team operates in harmony with one another creates more efficient and fluent workflow and leads to better results. Clients can trust that projects will be handled in a better way.

6. Your clients will have increased confidence because your credentialed project team has an ethical code. PMI credential holders must adhere to the PMI Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct which shows clients that your project team operates with integrity.

7. Your clients will have increased confidence because your project team has knowledge of the most up-to-date global practices. PMI credential holders must participate in the Continued Certification Requirements (CCR) program to maintain an active certification status. The CCR program requires credentials holders to partake in professional development activities throughout the year.

8. You will have repeatable processes and improved project results. This prevents you and your project teams from having to start from scratch every time you begin a new project because disciplined project management calls for lessons learned and shared process assets.

9. You will retain employees by investing in their professional development. When you invest in your employees professional development, you show your commitment to them and in turn, they will be more committed to the organization. You will be able to retain employees and attract new talent.

10. You will help grow the profession of project management. By endorsing PMI credentials, you provide long-term career paths in project management for your workforce.

That a question from subject project management.

A learning organization is basically a project intended to systematically educate, stimulate, and reward its participants in the realization of its activities. Its ultimate goal is to prepare participants for life.

Project management is basically the organized oversight of a series of activities intended to, in some way facilitate life.

Both of these are organizations, both are processes, both are hierarchical, both have a chain of command, both have written and detailed directives.
